On February 15th, 2014 the Azerbaijan Center in Houston in a collaboration with the Houston-Baku Sister City Association, Houston Azerbaijanis and the U.S. Azeris Network organized an event in memory of an outstanding Azerbaijani Grandmaster, Vugar Gashimov.
The attendees were mostly representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora as well as local chess fans and a few members from other countries.
At the beginning of the tournament, the Azerbaijan Center presented a short movie dedicated to Vugar Gashimov’s career and life. Then a moment of silence was held in memory of an incredible Azerbaijani Grandmaster.
The winner of the tournament and the owner of nominal Cup became Anar Omarov, a student at the University of Texas. Also, three participants who scored the same number of points, but lost by additional indicators received cash prizes.
The organizers consider to hold the tournament in memory of Grandmaster, Vugar Gashimov annually.
