As part of the Education Program, Houston-Baku Sister City Association (HBSCA) and the Azerbaijan Center had the pleasure to welcome and host the delegation of Baku Higher Oil School (BHOS), Mr. Elmar Gasimov, Rector; Ms. Samira A. Musayeva, Director of Quality Assurance Department; and Prof. Dr. Ramiz T. Humbatov, Vice-Rector on Training Science and International Relations. During their short visit to Houston, the Director of the Azerbaijan Center introduced BHOS to the Texas Graduate Center, the University Of Houston, RICE University and Texas A&M University. Several meetings were held and resulted to be all promising and fruitful.
On April 24th, at the University Of Houston, the BHOS delegation had a great meeting in the morning with Dr. Jaime Ortiz, Vice-Provost Global Strategies and Studies, along with Joseph Tedesco, Thomas Holley, Ramanan Krishnamoorti and Leah Scott. The meeting ended with the signature of a memorandum of understanding between the two universities as a first step of future cooperation on future academic programs in instruction, research and faculty development, student exchange and joint Masters and Bachelors programs in Engineering. In the afternoon, the delegation enjoyed their visit and tour at RICE University which celebrated their centennial in 2012. Several members of the university, David Vassar, Ann McAdam Griffin, John Marsh and Gary Marfin had a very interesting discussion on Nanoscale research at Rice.
On April 25th, the delegation headed to College Station to visit Texas A&M University System’s members including Mr. John Sharp, Chancellor, The Texas A&M University System; Billy Hamilton, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer; Tommy Williams, Vice Chancellor for Federal and State Relations; and James Hallmark, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The delegation was impressed by the gigantic size of the campus and the numerous activities and opportunities offered. In this meeting, Distance Masters programs in Engineering and cooperation were discussed.
The delegation was invited to meet with a very a University of Houston where the Energy Association of UH – CT Bauer College of Business organized the Azerbaijan Case Competition sponsored by SOCAR. Mrs. Irada Akhoundova, President of the Azerbaijan Center along with Mr. Elmar Gasimov (BHOS) came to greet the participants and judges of this competition.
This visit was concluded by two nice gathering. Members of the universities met for a dinner which was the perfect occasion to cheer on the future cooperation. BHOS delegation also met with Azerbaijani students to celebrate their graduation in Texas.
This brief visit to Houston was very productive and all different meetings promise not only to lead to the creation of great master and training programs but also to ensure a strong cooperation between Baku Higher Oil School and all the universities.
