Congressman J. Bridenstine, Representative of Oklahoma’s First District visited Houston – his second home – this year again. Rep. Jim Bridenstine is a graduate of RICE University with three majors.
Mrs. Irada Akhoundova, CEO of the Azerbaijan Center had the pleasure to participate in the Energy Security Roundtable with Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) organized by the Energy and Environment Initiative of Rice University.
The event also featured Congressmen Randy Weber (R-TX 14) as well as Mr. Natig Bakhishov, political officer of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington D.C.
The main topics discussed the energy in the United States with liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the role of the United States in global energy security. It was mentioned that the U.S. must play a more active role in energy security especially for European security.
Congressman Jim Bridenstine emphasized on the role of the Southern Gas Corridor in energy security of Europe. The Congressman also mentioned on two occasions how Azerbaijan for the U.S. in this region in terms of energy supplies.
The representative of Azerbaijan Embassy, Mr. Natig Bakhishov took the floor and talked about Southern Gas Corridor, Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and stressed the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor in insuring energy security in Europe.
Azerbaijan will bring over 16bcma (billion cubic meters per annum) to Europe along with new networks of pipelines to ensure the future energy security of the European Union.
Mr. Natig Bakhishov also stressed the fact that Europe is not formed as a single gas market. There are several markets which differ very keenly from each other.
Eastern and Southeastern European countries gas market suffer from interruption of gas more than Western European Countries. In order to eliminate this risk, the U.S. and European Union itself should have clear and practical mechanisms to maintain energy security of all European countries hence the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor.
It was also mentioned that the Southern Gas Corridor will be able to bring other major gas suppliers from Central Asia, Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean regions to transport hydrocarbon resources to European markets.
Following the speech of Mr. Bakhishov, both Congressmen stressed the importance of supporting Azerbaijani initiatives in the energy field to ensure the security of the European Union. It was also mentioned in this context, the importance of cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
After the roundtable discussions, a networking session took place where Mrs. Akhoundova had the pleasure to exchange some words with Congressman Randy Weber and other attendees of the energy sector.
