Unwrapping a Holiday Season

0 71
The last month of 2015 was full of various events which Azerbaijan Center and Houston-Baku Sister City Association members were honored to attend. Here’s a brief report on each of those meaningful events.
In December of 2015, Azerbaijan Center has been present at the Middle East Program organized by Rice University’s Baker Institute on the topic “Women’s Rights in the Middle East”
The mission of the Women’s Rights in the Middle East Program was to produce cutting-edge research and substantive policy recommendations to help practitioners and policymakers better predict how broader participation of women in the public and private spheres might impact regional attitudes and promote societal progress. The program also seeked to build a bridge between regional and international scholars and policymakers by hosting a distinguished lecture series and academic conferences.
We are glad about the fact that Azerbaijan Center and Houston-Baku Sister City Association Members are welcomed guests at many events of the City of Houston. Among the recent ones there are Mayoral Run-off Luncheon Forum, Holiday Reception in honor of the Houston Consular Corps, Greater Houston Partnership’s Annual Elected Officials Reception, First Lady’s Holiday Reception, Mayor’s Farewell Reception.
Each year the Mayor’s Office of Trade and International Affairs works with the Consular Corps of Houston and multicultural organizations to present Holidays Around the World, a miniature tree display and online auction to promote the unique culture, heritage, or holiday traditions of countries or regions using ornaments and national symbols.
Azerbaijan Center and Houston-Baku Sister City association have taken part in this event by fabricating a Christmas Tree (Saida Hagverdi) .The display was on view at the University of Houston-Downtown, One Main Street until December 14th. All proceeds from the online auction benefited the Houston Food Bank, the nation’s largest Feeding America food bank and the source of food for 500 hunger relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties. The Houston Food Bank is responsible for 50 million nutritious meals yearly.

On December 17, 2015 President and CEO of Azerbaijan Center Irada Akhoundova and a few other members of Azerbaijan Center and Houston-Baku Sister City Association have been invited to a Farewell Reception of Mayor Annise Parker. The Reception honored the volunteers of the Mayor’s International Trade and Development Councils and Houston’s Sister City Associations.
Mayor Annise Parker on behalf of the City of Houston pointed out that the role of sister city organizations in creating meaningful relationships abroad is recognized by the City of Houston.
Mayor Parker has presented Irada Akhoundova a Recognition Letter thanking her for the dedication and support and conveying “sincere thanks and deep gratitude for Mrs. Akhoundova’s service as a board member of Houston-Baku Sister City Association and Sister Cities of Houston”.
