The 3d Annual Amateur Chess Tournament in the memory of the Azerbaijani Chess Grandmaster Vugar Gashimov took place on the 21st of February in Houston at Center 64.
The tournament was planned and organized in cooperation between the Azerbaijan Center, Houston-Baku Sister City Association and Houston Azerbaijanis.
Ilgar Azizov (Houston Azerbaijanis) and Farid Mammadov (The Azerbaijan Center) opened the tournament by saying words of encouragement to all the participants and reminding them of the rules of the tournament.
There were about 30 participants including 5 kids who came to challenge their chess playing skills. The organizers were especially delighted to have kids participating in the tournament on a very high skill level. The children were playing with the adults; they took the tournament very seriously which resulted in one of the kids taking the 2nd prize!
Speaking about the Tournament itself, it was arranged in a swiss-system way, that is based on a non-elimination format. There were several rounds of the competition when the players paired to play depending on their score, not playing with the same opponent more than once.
The tournament lasted for almost 4 hours, and a well-deserved 1st prize went Khoa M Bui – (5.0/1883); 2nd prize was shared between Shelev Oberoi – (4.0/1924) and Ernesto Lizarondo – (4.0/1865).
The winners have been awarded with the Trophy, Certificates of Recognition and some monetary prizes.
